As a final step, a biocompatible material is inserted into the canals to prevent any new infections from developing. Sport Injuries To Your Mouth - What To Do???

Posted by FountainSquareCosmeticDentalGroup | Filed under

More than 5 million teeth are knocked out every year.  Both adults and children are at risk.  With proper emergency action, a tooth that has been entirely knocked out of its socket often can be successfully replanted and last for years.  Because of this, it is important to be prepared and know what to do if this happens to you or someone with you.  THE KEY IS TO ACT QUICKLY, YET CALMLY, AND FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS:

1.  Pick up tooth by the crown (the chewing surface) not the root.

Locate the tooth immediately; do not leave it at the site of the accident.  The tooth should be handled carefully - touch only the crown - to minimize injury to the root.  (see bottom of page for example of the crown portion of the tooth)

2.  If dirty, gently rinse the tooth with cold water, remembering not to handle the root surface.

*Do not use soap or chemicals  *Do not scrub the tooth
*Do not dry the tooth  *Do not wrap it in a tissue or cloth

3.  Reposition tooth in socket immediately, if possible.

The sooner the tooth is replaced, the greater the likelihood it will survive.  To reinsert, carefully push the tooth into the socket with fingers, or position above the socket and close mouth slowly.  Hold the tooth in place with fingers or by gently biting down on it.

4.  Keep tooth moist at all times.

The tooth must not be left outside the mouth dry.  If it cannot be replaced in the socket, put it in one of the following:

*Emergency tooth preservation kit (Save-A-Tooth)
*Milk   *Saliva    *Mouth (next to cheek or under tongue)

5.  Call your dentist immediately to have the tooth replaced and splinted.

Time is of the utmost importance, the faster you act, the better chance of saving the tooth- ideally, within 30 minutes.  However, it is possible to save the tooth even if it has been outside the mouth for more than an hour or more.

There is something you can do to help prevent your teeth from being knocked out.  Custom mouthguards are available by your dentist for increased breathability, speech clarity, and compliance.  They are more comfortable than store bought guards because they are custom fit and you know your teeth are protected.  Please give your dentisit a call to set up an appointment for your custom mouthguard.  The process usually takes 2 appointments.  The first appointment will be about 20-30 minutes to take impressions of your teeth.  Those impression will be used to fabricate your custom guard in a dental lab.  You will return in about a week to recieve your mouthgaurd for a quick 10-20 minute appointment to make sure the guard fits your mouth properly.

Good luck with all your sporting events, but don't forget your protective wear!  Have a great Spring and Summer.

*The crown of the tooth is the area you WANT to hold on to if your tooth comes out, NOT the ROOT!
