Early Oral Cancer Detection Helps Save Lives

Posted by FountainSquareCosmeticDentalGroup | Filed under , , , , ,

Most patients have no detectable symptoms during the early stages of oral cancer, but with routine dental check ups we can help you find signs and and review symptoms that might indicate oral cancer.  In the United States alone, over 35,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer every year.  While early detection boosts the survival rate to 80-90%, many times the diagnoses doesn't happen until the cancer has progressed.  For the month of April we are trying to get the awareness of oral cancer out to our patients to help that survival rate go up.  Listed below are some signs and symptoms that you can watch for yourself:

  • Patches on the lining of the mouth or tongue, usually red and white in color
  • Mouth ulcers that do not go away
  • A sore that does not heal
  • A swelling in the mouth that persists for over three weeks
  • A lump or thickening of the skin or lining of the mouth
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Loosening teeth (tooth) for no clear reason
  • Dentures don't fit properly
  • Jaw pain
  • Jaw stiffness
  • Sore throat
  • A sensation that something is stuck in your throat
  • Painful tongue
  • A hoarse voice
  • Pain in the neck that does not go away

If you have some of these symptoms you should see your doctor/dentist.  There are many other conditions and diseases with similar symptoms, but it doesn't hurt to check.
