What to Expect When Expecting

Posted by FountainSquareCosmeticDentalGroup | Filed under , , ,

There must be something in the water because lately we have seen a lot of pregnant women in the office. First of all, we would like to say congratulations! We thought it would be a good idea to offer some oral health advice on what to expect when expecting.

We know that you have a lot to think about during pregnancy, but we don’t want you to neglect your oral hygiene at the same time. The hormonal changes that occur can affect your gums and some women experience something called “pregnancy gingivitis”, which is an infection of the gums that can result in swelling and tenderness. One indicator of gingivitis during pregnancy is bleeding gums while brushing or flossing.

Sometimes, the gums in between the teeth can become enlarged, bleed easily, and look like a raw mulberrylike surface. These growths typically appear during the second trimester and are known as “pregnancy tumors”. These are not cancerous and normally disappear on their own after pregnancy.

You should continue to see your dentist regularly during pregnancy for oral examinations and cleanings. Some dentist may even recommend more frequent cleanings in order to prevent gingivitis. It is very important to maintain good oral health because studies indicate that pregnant women with periodontal disease, or gum disease, are at increased risk for pre-term delivery, which increases the risk of having a low-birth weight baby.

Patients are normally concerned about taking dental x-rays during the pregnancy; typically, we can defer taking x-rays until the baby is born. Pregnant women should not be treated with tetracycline because it can cause staining of the fetus’ developing teeth, causing them to look gray or brown permanently. Believe it or not, children’s teeth begin forming as early as 4 months in utero!

Your oral health is an important part of your overall health, and untreated dental disease can be harmful to you and your baby. The keys to maintaining good oral hygiene are brushing your teeth thoroughly twice a day, floss in between the teeth daily, and limit exposure to sugars because the longer it remains on the tooth, the greater the risk of decay. For more information on oral health during pregnancy, please visit the American Dental Assocation website.

Yes, we do treat children!

One of the most common questions that we get in the office is, “do you see children?”  Yes! We treat patients of all ages. In recognition of children’s dental health month and the Give Kids a Smile Campaign, we wanted to give you some information on your child’s oral health.

Children’s teeth begin forming before birth and typically start erupting by 6 months old. Normally, the first primary teeth to erupt are the lower central incisors followed by the upper central incisors. All 20 primary teeth usually appear by age 3, however the pace and eruption sequence may vary.

Oral care should begin soon after birth, wiping the gums with a clean, damp cloth after each cleaning. As soon as your child’s teeth begin appearing you should start brushing. You can schedule their first dental visit around 3 years of age, as all of the primary teeth should be present. Of course, if you have any concerns with your child’s tooth development you can always bring them in earlier, or call and we would be happy to answer any questions that you may have.

For your convenience Drs. Meyer and Harris offer afternoon and Saturday appointments. We are happy to provide your child with a pleasant first dental experience!

Your Furry Friend's Bad Breath...

Posted by FountainSquareCosmeticDentalGroup | Filed under , , ,

February is National Pet Dental Health Month! The American Veterinary Medical Association is trying to help out Man's Best Friend and make owners aware of the significance of their pet's oral health. We don't want you to neglect your teeth and gums or your pet's either! If your furry friend has bad breath it could signify a serious health risk, not just with their teeth and gums, but their internal organs as well. Dogs and cats can develop periodontal disease (gums disease) just like the rest of us. Daily homecare is essential, but it is also recommended that dogs get a professional cleaning once a year, at the vet's office of course. Sorry, we do not treat pets at our office; humans only please! : )

At Fountain Square Cosmetic Dental Group, we don't just care about your health and happiness, but your whole families-including your four-legged friends!

Drs. Meyer and Harris Provide Free Dental Treatment!

Posted by FountainSquareCosmeticDentalGroup | Filed under , , ,

Did you know that every year Drs. Meyer and Harris, and their staff, donate thousands of dollars in free dental treatment? Last year alone, they provided over $11,000 worth of dental treatment to individuals participating in the Dental Options program! Dental Options is a program sponsored by the Ohio Dental Association and the Ohio Department of Health. This is a great program that links people in need with dentists who have agreed to treat approved patients at significantly reduced fees, or no fee at all. Dr. Meyer and Dr. Harris are happy to help those who need it most. If you are interested in this program, you can find more information at the Dental Options website.

Along with the Dental Options program, Drs. Meyer and Harris are active in a number of other programs throughout the community. Dr. Harris is currently serving his second term as a council member for the Cincinnati Dental Society (CDS). This is a non-profit corporation that promotes public health and welfare through service, education and charitable endeavors.  The goal of the Cincinnati Dental Society is to advance the dental profession through education and mutual cooperation among its members. Dr. Harris is also on the technology committee for the CDS.

Dr. Meyer currently sits on three committees.  The Program Committee brings in the continuing education courses to Cincinnati.  He’ll be chairing that committee in 2012.  The Access to Dental Care Committee, organizes the Give Kids a Smile event in February each year and the “Leave No Vet Behind” event in which  free dental services are provided to those kids and vets who fall through the cracks.  The Media and Public Relations committee provides feedback from organized dentistry to the local community. Dr. Meyer also serves on the Credentialing and Utilization Review committees for the insurance company, Dental Care Plus.  The Utilization Review committee sets insurance company policy and reviews appealed claims from subscribers.

At Fountain Square Cosmetic Dental Group we strive to be active participants in our community and give back as much as we can. As you can see with their list of extracurricular activities the doctors are busy behind the scenes as well as in the office.  Feel free to ask them questions about any of these topics when you visit.

If you have crowded, crooked teeth, or spacing, look no further. We can help you achieve the smile you have always wanted! Dr. Meyer and Dr. Harris are now offering ClearCorrect, a clear, simple solution to straighten your teeth. We know that your lifestyle and appearance is important to you and we want to help.

ClearCorrect allows you to straighten your teeth by wearing a series of clear trays that are practically INVISIBLE! Most people will not even notice that you are wearing anything, even your spouse! ClearCorrect also allows for a flexible treatment plan, meaning you can schedule your appointments when it is convenient for you, and only needing to come in for a new set of trays every 4 to 6 weeks!

In addition to the ClearCorrect trays being discreet, they are also very comfortable-no cuts or scrapes like with metal braces. They are REMOVABLE-you can take them out to eat, brush, and floss so that you can maintain optimal oral hygiene at the same time! Not to mention AFFORDABLE and FAST; costing much less than traditional braces and treatment is typically completed in 6 months to 1 year.
